Family Owl Program at Coastal Discovery Museum from 6:30-8 p.m. From beak to tail, birds living in the Lowcountry exhibit some amazing adaptations for survival. During this avian investigation, participants will discover what makes owls the ultimate nocturnal predator, explore their incredible adaptations, dissect an owl pellet, and take a short evening hike (weather permitting) to learn how to search for owls in your own backyard. The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island has announced a “Family Fun Day” from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 70 Honey Horn Dr. See the Museum’s boardwalk exhibits, learn about our salt marsh, explore the Replica Shell Ring and see what sort of shells, animal bones, and more- are hidden in the replica Shell Ring. You will have the opportunity to visit the horse barn and pasture to see our marsh tackies “Tadpole” and “Comet” and then learn about archeology with our Camp Dig-It demonstration with hands-on activities with actual artifacts! A visit to the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Enclosure will let you see the life cycle of various butterflies we have here on Hilton Head Island. Throw a cast net, pull up the crab trap, tour the Heritage Garden and see what rice, cotton, Indigo and other crops look like. Bird watching and fiddler crab activity is where the action is from any of the 3 boardwalks visitors may visit. During the day in the new Kid’s Zone, children will have an opportunity to try on Colonial clothing, play with Colonial toys and games, take a scavenger hunt on the pained mural wall and learn about shells, turtle bones and many other items found on our island thanks to the sponsorship of The Bargain Box. The Hilton Head Regional Health Care Temporary Exhibit Gallery will feature the SC Watermedia Society Annual Exhibition. The Sandbox Children’s Museum will also have activities during the day. The Coastal Discovery Museum, 70 Honey Horn Dr. will host a family-oriented program on Family Birding and Bird Box Building from 2-4 p.m. Take a bird hike through different habitats while learning basic birding skills. Discovery where and when to go birding, how to identify birds, learn what tools you need, and how to attract birds to your own backyard.
